oliva nova 9th green-2

FRIDAY 6th October and 37 members and 15 Guests turned out at Oliva Nova for the traditional pairs competition, a 4BBB. With some excellent prizes on offer and the sought after trophy, the Captain’s Cup, the competition was bound to be very competitive! Guests were playing an individual Stableford, again with some special prizes on offer.

A special thanks to Daniel Asis Boyer, Oliva’s Director of Golf, for ensuring that all went smoothly and for sponsoring a major prize. Among the Guests we particularly welcomed Ex Levante members, Michael Cuerden and his wife Helen Jones and ex Captain, Martin Gates.

With near perfect conditions from both weather and course scores were likely to be high and this was proven at the end of the day. There were also prizes for NTP’s, which were available on all 4 Par 3’s.

Hole of the day belongs to Jenny Downes on hole 11, where having made the green she then sank a 15m putt to record a notable 2. Unfortunately, she missed out on the NTP, which ultimately went to Penny Barden with 9.8m.

As to the competitions, the top 4 in the pairs competition were separated by only 4 points, but “steady” Brian Norbury and his partner Jim Thomas took first place with 45 points. It seemed that the rub of the green worked well as when one player fell short the other always came up with the answer! Second place went to Peter Jenkins and Jenny Downes with 44 points and third place went to David Downes and the “old rogue” Fred Betteridge with 42 points. John Cook and Ian Mackenzie claimed fourth spot, also with 42 points.

In the guest competition, Sally Mason claimed top spot with 36 points with Mike Cuerden 2nd on 35 points. Details of the NTP winners are shown in the full results below.

As usual, the match was followed by the Captain’s Lunch and raffle, which was won by Maureen Young. All proceeds from the raffle going to the Captain’s charity, the Preventorio Orphanage in Gandia, which this year raised €265 and was subsequently “Rounded up” to €300 by the Captain.

The Captain presents the raffle proceeds to Sylvia Barnish, the Orphanage’s fund raiser at Bay Radio.
