Levante Golf Society at 16th Feburary 2018  La Sella.

Levante Golf Society   February 16th

This week saw Levante back at La Sella for a fun day out to play a teams of 4  Accumulator competition. A Stableford format with the best 3 scores counting.  After rather a chilly start the warm sun made playing conditions delightful.  Having said that quite a few players found the variable speed of the greens and pin positions quite a challenge.

The winning team of the day with 105pts. was - Mike Harding, Tony Bowers, Kevin Waterland and a jubilant Keith Price after struggling in recent games.
In second place with 104 pts. was - Hans Benzler, Robert Bledloe, Colin Grant and the Ghost scorer being our Captain Roger Miller who hates leaving without a prize !

The NTP's this week were won by Kenny Kennard and Roger Jennings who also converted to a 2.
2's was also enjoyed by Hans Benzler and Colin Grant and all in all, a most enjoyable day for all.

Levante G.C.      Eagles at Oliva

Friday 19th January saw 30 members and one guest turn out at Oliva Nova for a regular Stableford Competition.

On what can only be described as perfect conditions with warming sunshine and hardly a breath of wind, some good scores were anticipated, especially as Oliva is in excellent condition again.

However the players found scoring rather difficult, perhaps caused by the fact that  the greens were quite slick and some tricky  pin positions, which took all your attention so as not to 3 putt.

Only one player managed to come to grips with the course and this was Secretary Roger Jennings with 35pts playing off 22.  The low scores meant that the buffer zones were reduced by -2.

Having said that, we had 4 players who registered a 2 - being Donna Green on the 16th and Don Larner on the 3rd.
Anne Edwards (11) holed her second shot on the tough par 4, 7th hole  and John Holgate (26) also holed out on the par 4, 4th hole.  In my 14 years with Levante I have no recollection of this feat happening before.

Captain Roger Miller seemed somewhat embarrassed by the fact that he took the Div. 2 prize for the 3rd week in a row by consistent steady play.  We await the wheels coming off ! but it's unlikely.

Levante Golf Society at 12th January 2018  Villaitiana

Well a great day for all 21 players, the weather was kind and the course was in good condition, even though the greens were extremely quick and the nasty Greenkeeper put the holes on steep downslopes.

Well done to Chris Partridge who came out on top of Div 1 with 34 points  (Chris is an affiliated member with White Coast.) 2nd was our favourite Swede Hans Benzler, with Colin Grant returning to form coming 3rd, with 33 and 32 points respectively.

Division 2 was won by the Captain Roger Miller who continues his excellent form and start for 2018, with 34 points. In second place was the "wedge magician" Terry Saville with 32 points, Dave Geeson was 3rd with an unlucky 28 points which should have been more.

Shot of the day in our 4 ball was Kenny Kennard's who won nearest to the pin on the 3rd. The ntp was won on 14th by, surprise surprise the skipper Roger Miller.

Special mention of Hans Benzler who carded two 2's on the 12th & 14th,(showing off again) also Mike Treasure 12th, Colin Grant 14th and Chris Partridge 14th all carded excellent two's on as mentioned before difficult greens!

The senior prize was won by the man with the vice-like grip, the Treasurer Mike Harding with 29 points.
Next week 19th January back to Oliva Nova for another rendition of bad luck, bad play, good play and frustration, but plenty of laughs.

Captain Roger & Vice Don bring in 2018

With an audience and friendly banter, Captain Roger’s Drive-In at Oliva Nova was 20 meters further than last year and was also in the middle of the fairway, with Hans Benzler correctly guessing the distance at 143 meters to win a bottle of cava.
Roger and his new Vice Captain then carried on from their good start to win the day’s Pairs Better Ball competition with 41 points.  They just beat Danny Herron & Roger Jennings on count-back, who also scored 41 points. Third place was taken by Mike Treasure & Ian MacKenzie with 40 points.
Mike Treasure had an excellent shot on the 3rd hole as he was only 80 cm from the pin, but NTP on the 16th was more of a struggle because the strong blustery wind made club selection difficult, resulting in Jane’s shot of within 8.22 m being the best of the day.

Levante Golf Society at Oliva Nova 8th December 2017

When 28 members and guests turned out for Levante’s annual Turkey Trot competition, an unexpected delay to the match was imposed by Frost!! Yes, frost; it’s not supposed to be cold in Spain according to the British government. However, after some 45 minutes delay, those that had decided to play, probably because there was a prize for all and it was real booze, enjoyed a sunny day at Oliva with a Pairs competition. The format, as selected by the Vice-Captain, being a Combination Stableford with both scores to count.

The course, as usual, was in excellent condition and the greens were still fast despite the wintery start!! As to the match, the winning pair were Anne Edwards and Penny Barden, cries of fix were soon heard as Anne had decided the match format, but in reality it was very close with the first 3 teams separated by only 2 points.

Hole of the day undoubtedly belongs to Hans Benzler who had an Eagle 2 on the par 4 18th hole. His superb drive off the Tee setup an opportunity for a second shot straight to the green which ultimately found the cup. There was one other 2 recorded by Graham Hutson who managed a 2 on the par 3 11th Hole.

The NTP’s on Holes 3 and 16 were won by Colin Grant and Donna Green respectively. The winning team results are shown below. Full results are available on the “Player Stats” page of the web site.

Besides the winner’s prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, everyone received a gift of a bottle of wine for Christmas.

  • 1st  Anne Edwards & Penny Barden 62 points
  • 2nd Mike Harding & Dave Geeson 61 points
  • 3rd Kevin Waterland and Eric Edwards 60 points

  • Graham Hutson Hole 11
  • Hans Benzler Hole 18 (Eagle)

  • Hole 3 Colin Grant – 3.2m
  • Hole 16 Donna Green – 2.0m
