Report by Levante’s Captain, Anne Edwards

Lo Romero 18th island green

This years three-day Away Trip included a first-time visit to La Manga, and to our old favourite, Lo Romero.

The first day was at La Manga North where the weather was overcast and, although the fairways could have been in better condition, the greens were good and true.

We played a fourball better ball format, mixing one Division 1 player with a Division 2 player and the winners were Tony Slipper and David Downes, who totalled an impressive 39 points, one more than Bob Fell and Rob Westlands who had 38 points, with Anne Edwards and Jenny Downes third with the same score.

Nearest the Pin prizes went to:

  • Hole 2, Tony Slipper from 15 inches (he then proceeded to three putt!);
  • Hole 4, Alyson Wood;
  • Hole 8, Donna Green (beating ‘her’ Danny!);
  • Hole 13, David Downes;
  • Hole 16, Keith Price.

Unfortunately the heavens opened on the second day, at La Manga South.

We set off in rain playing in teams of four with the best three scores to count but by the time we got on to the second nine it was torrential. Every player decided enough was enough which this gave us all the opportunity to get back to the hotel, warm up and get down to happy hour, which turned out to be two hours!

It was a shame because everyone enjoyed playing the South course, which is their championship course and it was in excellent order. Maybe we have to schedule that in again sometime so we can complete the round!

It was decided not to give out any prizes but to use them towards the last day at Lo Romero, which gave everyone the opportunity to win a prize.

As usual Lo Romero was in excellent order although it was spoilt a little bit for us as we had to start off on the 10th whilst the ground staff were doing repairs to the front nine following the heavy rain.

This meant that we couldn't wait by Lo Romero’s signature hole – the Island hole 18th - to see the players coming in and attempting to reach the green with their approach shots.

However, not being in the spotlight might have suited those who managed to find the dreaded wet stuff!

The format at Lo Romero was a ‘waltz’ with teams of four. And it was Danny Herron, Brian Norbury, Graham Birch (guest Alan Turpin) and Alan Turpin who danced away with the main prize.

Their 94 points gave them a six-point winning margin over Tony Slipper, David Downes, Les Vine and Alan Overton.

Third were David French, Michael Harding, Roger Miller and Eric Edwards with 84 points, one more than Alyson Wood, Anne Edwards, Donna Green and Jenny Downes. Fifth were Bob Fell, Rob Westlands, Keith Price and Alan Simpson with 81 points.

Nearest the Pin winners were:

  • Hole 5, Keith Price;
  • Hole 7, Alan Turpin;
  • Hole 12, Anne Edwards.

Unfortunately the pin was in such a difficult position on hole 15 that no-one managed to stop the ball on the green.

I would like to thank my Vice Captain Roger Miller for all his organisational skills in taking the names, money and organising the hotel.  David French for doing all the playlists. Finally to Campbell Lamont for booking all the courses and hotels.  Everything went swimmingly.

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and we look forward to Roger Miller's Away Trip next year.
