Levante Golf Society
SPRING TROPHY, 2017
Round 1 at La Sella 3rd March 2017
IT’S SPRING TIME AT LEVANTE…..
It’s not just the time of year, but Levante’s first major competition of the season, the SPRING TROPHY, a 36 hole Stableford competition played over two separate Rounds. The 1st Round was played at La Sella yesterday with Round 2 to follow at Oliva Nova next Friday, 10th March.
A good turnout of 26 members and 2 guests enjoyed the “Spring weather” even if they didn’t enjoy some of the challenges of La Sella’s “old course”. The pin positions on some holes proved rather more demanding that usual, which was reflected in the scores with only one player achieving more than 36 points.
Brian Norbury, with 37 points, carries a clear lead of 3 points over his nearest challengers, Val Jenkins and Eric Edwards both with 34 points, into Round 2. However, Oliva Nova can often be unpredictable and it’s all still to play for.
There were no 2’s, probably due to the pin positions! The NTP’s were on Hole 1 in 2 and on hole 15, unsurprisingly no one made the green on Hole 1, but Roger Jennings won the NTP prize on Hole 15 with a distance of 3.9 metres.

OLIVA SORTS OUT THE SPRING TROPHY……
With Summer like weather the second round of Levante’s Spring Trophy competition gave the 28 players a glorious day to try and snatch the lead away from the first round leaders. Oliva Nova always finds a way to upset the “Bookies” and so it proved on Friday the 10th March. With scoring somewhat improved over the first round, mistakes and Oliva’s water proved decisive in sorting out the final winners.
Brian was unable to sustain his form at the second round and Eric showed sufficient improvement to become the clear leader overall winning by 8 points. Brian clung on to the “Runner up” position, beating Dave Geeson by 1 point. However, Brian did manage the consolation of winning the Seniors prize for the day.
Concurrently, there were of course the normal Divisional competitions, which also count towards Levante’s POY and Eclectic competitions. There were three 2’s and one of them must count as “Shot of the day”, when Hans Benzler put his drive on the fringe of the green at the difficult 6th Hole at Oliva Nova, not only a long way but with a challenging hazard right in front of the green. The NTP’s went to Errol Heath on Hole 3 and Vice Captain Anne on Hole 16.
